Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Professional Pathways Australia?

Through years of experience, Professional Pathways Australia has developed a network of contacts around Australia. We will arrange a fully supported internship. Our services can also be used to help you prepare for, set up and live in a foreign country.

How long do the internships last?

The maximum length of the program is 12 months; the minimum length of program is 6 months. Applications under 6 months may be accepted after assessment by Professional Pathways Australia staff.

Are the internships paid?

Yes. Wages will depend on the internships. Different internships attract different wages. Australia is renowned for having a very regulated and strict industrial relations system which means that employers are closely monitored by the government to ensure adherence to minimum wage and employment requirements. Wages will normally vary from AUD$12-$20 per hour depending on qualifications, experience and any awards that the employers fall under.

Can I select where I would like to be placed?

We cannot guarantee the location of your placement. Upon applying for this program, you will be able to select a preferred destination. This will only be used as a guide for the placement process. At certain times of the year, different tourist regions have greater demands and as such, Professional Pathways Australia will place you where there is a role available as opposed to making sure we meet your preferred destination.

What kind of work can I expect to do?

Hospitality placements involve a range of experience in various departments of a hotel or resort. Housekeeping and room service is not to comprise more than 3 months within the 12 month period (or for shorter hospitality placements, a pro-rata amount of time).

Will I have a contact person throughout my internship?

Yes. You will be assigned a supervisor at your work place. In addition, Professional Pathways Australia will provide you with a placement consultant and access to assistance and support.

Can I enrol in a language program before I start my internship?

Yes. Professional Pathways Australia is able to arrange English courses in all major cities. Please be aware that if your hotel is located outside a major city, travel may be required following your English course. You are responsible for the cost of this component of the program in addition to the initial program charges.

Is accommodation provided?

In some circumstances, hotels will provide accommodation to their staff; however this is not something we can guarantee, as it will only be known once a placement is found.

How long does it take to organise the internship?

Professional Pathways Australia encourages candidates to apply for a placement as far in advance as possible. The minimum processing time for the program on a Working Holiday Visa or Work & Holiday Visa is 8 weeks, and 12 weeks on a 416 Special Program visa.

How many internship offers will I receive?

Professional Pathways Australia will make you one internship offer. The offer will match your request(s) on your application documents. Professional Pathways Australia guarantees the internship for 50% of your total internship duration. This means that if your internship finishes within the first half of your placement, then Professional Pathways Australia will find you another one at no extra charge, unless the position is terminated due to the points outlined in the Terms and Conditions.

Professional Pathways Australia will guarantee a minimum of 20 hours per week (on average) for the duration of the program. The hours may vary from week to week; however, the minimum number of hours accrued over the duration of your internship will amount to (number of weeks) x (20 hours).

Will I be required to have an interview?

An internship offer may depend on you attending an interview by phone or in person with the employer prior to commencing employment. Refusal to attend an interview with a potential employer will constitute your cancellation. If you are unsuccessful at the interview, Professional Pathways Australia will provide you with either one more internship offer or two more interviews.
Refusal of your offer will constitute cancellation.

What will happen if I don’t like my internship?

If you believe your internship is unsatisfactory, Professional Pathways Australia staff will intervene to determine what the problem is and correct it where possible. We maintain excellent relationships with each of our host hotels. This enables us to negotiate on your behalf. If progress cannot be made, we will organise an alternative placement as soon as is possible.

How do I get paid?

In all cases, you will be paid directly by the company. This will be in accordance with the relevant award wages for the internship. If you are not covered by an award, then the rate of pay will be negotiated between Professional Pathways Australia and the company prior to commencement.

You will need to set up a bank account in Australia upon commencement in order for Professional Pathways Australia to pay the relevant wages and also apply for a Tax File Number. Wages will normally vary from $12-$20 per hour depending on qualifications, experience and any awards that the employers fall under.
